The marking gauge
The marking gauge
The marking gauge is a precision hand tool used in carpentry, cabinetmaking, and metalworking to scribe lines parallel to the edge or face of a workpiece. Its main function is to measure just once and transfer that exact distance repetitively along the wood or metal, ensuring maximum accuracy in cuts, rabbets, and joints.
Stock or body:
The supporting base that slides by pressing firmly against the straight edge of the wood.
Stem or beam:
The moving bar that passes through the body and adjusts to set the marking distance.
Thumb screw or locking screw:
The mechanism (usually with a wingnut) that locks the beam at the selected measurement..jpg)
